DIY : Comment ne pas rater la décoration de votre abat-jour : recouvrir un abat-jour de tissu/DIY: How to not miss the decoration of your lampshade: cover a lampshade with fabric

English version below

DIY: How to not miss the decoration of your lampshade: cover a lampshade with fabric

We do not always have a big budget for decoration or we live in an apartment with all the walls in white and the having to paint it feels like a huge task for us.

If you are in this kind of situation, one thing you can do is to add some colors to items in your decoration, such as a lampshade, the subject I will discuss today.

How did I get to decorate a lampshade? It was a project that was in my head, but I never tried it before. Then one day, my phone rang and a customer told me this: I know it's not what you usually do (and I tell myself: no, really?), But I would like you to cover our lampshade with a fabric that we have. So I told him that we had to meet to evaluate the project, because until then I had only done it in my head.

So I met the client, with whom everything went well, and he had much more confidence in me than myself on this project. I remember that he said to me: I know you can do it (meanwhile, in my head, I said at the same time : how could you be so sure?). But I finally accepted the project ...
I also remembered this quote from Theodore Roosevelt '' Whenever you are asked if you can do a job, tell ‘em, ‘Certainly, I can!’ then get busy and find out how to do it’’

So I had to really manage to make it happen, because imagining a project in one’s head and realizing it in reality, are two different things! On the other hand, doesn’t the saying want everything to start from visualization?

So I did my research and gathered the necessary material:
Material to cover the lampshade
- lampshade, supplied by the customer
- Fabric, also supplied by the customer
- Spray adhesive glue: it is very important not to use a classic glue for fabric. The spray glue allows a more regular distribution of the adhesive on the work surface and avoids having bumps in places on the fabric. For my part, I used: Sluyter Feather-Spray 470
- Paper to make a pattern: you can use paper for pattern if you already have it or recycle newspaper that you will paste together with double-sided tape to have a sufficient surface to cut the pattern of your lampshade.
- Hot glue or fabric liquid glue for finishing
- Scissors
- Pencil

Where to find the material?

For the lampshade, I suggest you to use one you already have, or if you are not sure about the project and want to give it a try first, buy a lampshade at a discount in a furniture store or in a second-hand items store.
The rest of the material, namely: fabric, spray adhesive glue, paper (you can recycle what you already have), scissors, you will find them easily in a fabric and accessories store. If you are in Montreal and surroundings, you can buy them at Fabricville, Club tissus or any other place you know.

The different steps to follow:
1- Drawing of the pattern: roll the lampshade on the paper reserved for this purpose, and with the pencil, draw the contour gradually until it goes round. If your lampshade is big like that of my client, I suggest you make the pattern only for the half of the lampshade.
After drawing the pattern and before cutting it, add 1.5 cm or 2 cm to each edge of the pattern. This fabric supplement will allow you to finish the edge of the lampshade later. You now have your pattern. Congratulations, you have achieved a milestone in your project!

Draw a pattern
2- Cut the fabric: now place your pattern on the wrong side of the fabric that you want to use to decorate your lampshade. In case you had cut a pattern of half the total surface of your lampshade, fold the fabric in two and place the pattern on the fold. Then cut out your fabric following the edges of your pattern.

3- Laying the fabric on the lampshade: now that you have gone through the first two steps of your project, it is time to move on to step three which is also crucial: pay attention while applying the spray adhesive glue. I suggest you do a test on a very small portion of the lampshade at the beginning of the surface to be decorated before covering everything. Test the waiting time for the glue which is usually 1 to 3 minutes. Spray your glue on the back of the fabric or on the lampshade in a uniform manner, without overloading. Then stick the fabric on the shade. If this does not go well in one place and it is a little crooked, immediately take off the fabric and reposition it.
Cut the fabric

4- Finishing: fold the edge of the fabric towards the inside of the lampshade and use liquid glue for fabric that allows a better finish than the hot glue. In the event you can’t seem to have a nice finish, make a notch at different places in the fabric (the edge of the fabric) to be able to fold it inwards.

5- Bonus: in theory, you are done with your project at the previous step, but you can add an additional step which is really not obligatory (my client did not need it) by adding another element such as ruffle. If you are looking for inspiration, take a look here. If you opt for this addition, use the hot glue.

Now, I'm sure you're wondering if the project for my client was a success. I humbly admit it wasn’t
The lampshade covered with bogolan
that great: I was not too proud of myself, I had trouble with the adhesive spray in some places. But, what was most funny in the situation is to see my client reassure me by saying: this is the first time you do it and it's normal that everything is not perfect. I have precious customers, thank you.

In my opinion, the most crucial step not to be neglected is the drawing of the pattern, because the lampshades do not have straight shapes on which you can put your fabric directly as is before sticking. They often have oval shapes much like corolla skirts or skater skirts. So, you really have to draw a pattern first.

The next step that I also consider important is the choice of spray adhesive glue. I opted for: Sluyter Feather-Spray 470. I saw that there is also the Sluyter Feather-Spray 476, used in the same type of project by Club tissus. I wondered if it was because I had used the 470 rather than the 476 that I had this kind of difficulty in some places for the adhesion of the fabric on the lampshade. I can not answer yes or no to this question because I took my glue after being advised in a store. Surely, I did not spread the glue properly on the fabric.

Cushion cover
My client completed his lampshade order with a large custom cushion cover that my team and I have done very well. See below  a picture that he sent me. He was very pleased with the result especially because he had already made a first attempt to make the same cover elsewhere and it did not worked out well.

Do not hesitate to let us know about your projects, for an evaluation. Also, share with me your project of decoration of your lampshade, it will be a pleasure for me to see it.
See you soon for another publication on the blog. And in the meantime, take care of yourself.

The 7 attitudes that prove it is you who highlight clothes and accessories and not the other way around

English version below

What are the 7 attitudes to take into account to highlight clothes and accessories?

Today, Elvire will tell us about them in details on the blog.

Any fashion designer expert in their field is inspired by a muse to create clothes or accessories. By muse  we mean a person, man or woman, whose body or look, measurements, lines and curves inspire creations.
We become without pretention a fashion artists when we head to our wardrobe to dress up. When the task is too arduous, we can use the services of a fashion consultant. Whether it is ourselves or the fashion consultant who chooses our style, at the end we will be the ones who will highlight the cloth or accessory. I compare this to a solo choreography that the dancer is preparing to perform. They will do it with all that she is: physically, mentally, spiritually, their training ... That is exactly the same thing when we wear a dress or accessory. It is us who emphasize it and not the the other way around. What does that require?

1- Self-confidence: the attitude to feel good in one's skin, whether you are large, small, thin, round, black, white or yellow. Self-confidence is our first garment. It is invisible (to the naked eye) but certainly remarkable in the simple way of standing in a cloth, or with an accessory, like a hat for example. Self-confidence makes us dare to choose clothing at the limit of what might shock those for whom we will become the reflection of their lack of self-confidence. Ladies and gentlemen, work on your confidence so a simple bow tie, the most classic one, will become the most prominent bow tie on you.

2- Good mood: a person in a good mood is a ray of sunshine for all the people they meet. Bring the usual black dress to a person who is in a great mood and make them wear it. You will have the impression of meeting the most coquettish girl on earth; the basic black dress will be illuminated. Everyone will then want to know where she got their dress from, and yet ...

3- Training: you want to highlight your fashion style? Feel good in your skin. Being well in one's skin can go through several psychological attitudes of personal enhancement, but one thing that greatly contributes to it is training. I call it the friend of your body and mind. Training releases toxins from your body and reconciles you with your mind. Make a physical activity that gives you pleasure a habit. The more your body is in friendship with you, the more your mind rejoices. People who feel well in their skin also feel great in fashion clothing and accessories. How can you be well in an outer garment if you are uncomfortable "in your skin" which is your first garment?

4- Daring: the kind of comments like this cloth would not fit me well, this color either, etc ... Get advice and dare! The audacity brings you out of your comfort zone and opens you up to novelty, originality. Get off the beaten track. Expand the left part of your brain, become the artist of your style and your charm.

5- Habit: here is the paradox. As much as it is necessary to dare several styles and types of clothes, it is also necessary to keep the perfect kit as much as possible. For some people, it will be the short dress to the knees. Good weather bad weather, the dress is what their personality highlights. These people will keep this habit with changes in the accessories or textures and colors of the garment. But it will be a habit to preserve, a habit that will also be part of their charm. Their winning formula! You will often hear their friends tell them, "I love your dresses." In reality, what they mean is that the girl highlights her dresses!

6- The smile: one will never stress enough that on any face, no matter who wears it, a smile is the antidote to all situations. A smile is bright, a smile is vulnerability and at the same time an unprecedented strength of character and charisma.
A smile relaxes the muscles of the face and offers you a look of magnificence. Whatever the garment or accessory you put on, your smile, which by the way is in itself the most essential and indispensable accessory will enhance your look and attract the most refractory.

7- Your words: to highlight a garment is not only visual art; the way you talk is also part of it. Imagine a young lady in her set of cigarette pants, white jacket and matching lace bustier who creates a wow effect when she enters the room. First words and what????? No class, no speaking skills, a very vulgar tone and everything that goes with it. In short, when you open your mouth to say something, simply your name, do it with a minimum of class, humility and a well spoken language. Whatever your accent, the language used ... your words help give worth to what you have worn as a garment or fashion accessory.

All this to simply say that while the work of a creator is there to make you beautiful, happy and contribute to your charm, to highlight their art, the one who wears this creation will have to continue the art work ... because yes it is an art to create!

Do you think they are other points to take in consideration to feel good in your clothes and highlight your personality?

Le WAX : ce que j’en pense/My thoughts on the WAX

English version below

My thoughts on the WAX

On December 30, the newspaper Le Monde published an article on the WAX titled: ‘’Comment le wax fait croire qu’il est africain et étouffe les vrais tissus du continent’’ (French Only) which raised a lot of reactions like: Really? I did not know that…

I was surprised to read such comments, but at the same time I understand because I learned the true origin of the WAX only when I started working with this fabric. I wanted to discover the origin of this textile which is found in most of my creations and I thus learned that:

The WAX, although commonly called African fabric and mostly worn in Africa, does not come from Africa. Its manufacture began in the 19th century in the Dutch and English colonies in Indonesia by a manual technique of printing with wax (which gives the name to this fabric) of colored patterns on cotton fabric.

The first WAX fabrics were brought to Africa by men from the Ashanti kingdom in the Gold Coast (today known as Ghana) who went to fight in Borneo and Sumatra under the leadership of the Dutch and English settlers.

Since that time, the WAX has spread widely on the continent and even outside where it is declined in different formats: clothing, decoration accessories, fashion accessories for men, women, kids, Etc.

Vlisco Factory In  Netherlands: quality control by an employee
The Dutch, particularly  Pieter Fentener van Vlissingen, installed a Vlisco factory in 1846, which produces the Dutch WAX and three other brands: Woodin, Uniwax and GTP in Helmond in the Netherlands. He industrialized the technique of the Indonesians to be able to produce the WAX in larger quantities and sell it cheaper.

There are different types of WAX, namely: the Dutch WAX, as the name suggests, is produced in Holland; the English WAX, less prestigious than the previous one and produced in the United Kingdom. There is also the African WAX, mainly produced in Ghana at the beginning, was subsequently extended to other African countries such as Benin, my home country. In Benin, the WAX is produced by the Société Béninoise de Textile (Beninese Textile Company), SOBETEX , where there are three qualities of WAX: the Chigan, of comparable quality to the Dutch wax; The Védomè, of intermediate quality and the Chivi which quality is clearly lower than the first two.

In recent years, the enthusiasm for the WAX has grown dramatically on the African continent as well as in Europe and the United States with stars such as Rihanna, Beyoncé and many others who have not hesitated to wear it. Even luxurious brands such as Burberry have inserted it in their collections.

With this widespread deployment of WAX around the world, the question is: what place do we as creators give to fabrics of African origin in our creations?

Bogolan
For my part, I already use African WAX in some of my creations and this year, I introduce the bogolan (fabric produced in Mali, Burkina Faso and Guinea and characterised by its stripes and the dye technic) which also has the wind in its sails in recent times (article Pagnifik ).

Other brands such as Nana Wax, Sapelle, Nio Far, Ebony City, Norwegian Wood, Nakimuli, LesEnfants Sauvages already use the bogolan. The creators Élie Kuamé  who likes dan fani (woven fabric in Burkina Faso) and Iman Ayissi who uses batik and kenté (Ghanaian fabric) refrain from using WAX which is not African and highlight in their creations textiles from the continent.

Although the WAX is booming, textiles of African origin are making their way. It is up to us creators to use them more and more to contribute to their outreach and export.

Croyez-vous que les rêves se réalisent?/Do you believe that dreams come true?

Croyez-vous que les rêves se réalisent?

Please see English version below

Do you believe that dreams come true?

When we were children, we all had dreams and it was so easy to talk about them with lots of sparks in our eyes. We had the certainty of accomplishing them. Who could stop us? We believed we were invincible, especially without the constraints of the daily life of an adult.
Today, I share with you the story of Yvana who will tell us whether she has or not achieved her childhood dreams.

And the adventure begins!

As a child, we all heard this famous question: what will you do when you grow up?
I used to reply: teacher and business woman. These two activities have nothing in common. But this is what I want to do with my heart, passion and with my guts!

When I left university, I no longer had these childhood dreams in mind. Oh, no! I wanted to work for a communication agency or a large company. Have a good salary, the possibility of traveling, holidays (at least 3 weeks per year). To make it short, the beautiful life! Childless, a good career and just a husband who (I thought) had the same goals as me at that time. So I worked in an agency, then a year later in events planning. I liked all that, yes really. Then one day, without seeing it coming, I dreamed of maternity ... And my dream surprised me and finally came true. Everything then changed. Priorities, goals ... I just wanted to take care of my baby. What I did during the first 18 months of her life. I did not want to leave that to anyone else.

When she started daycare, I felt the need to return to my career. And barely time to think that baby 2 was on the way. Oh my God! I cried so much! I wanted, to get back to my career. But no ... Life had decided otherwise. I had to concentrate on this new little miracle which changed  my way of seeing life. The more it grew in me, the more I wanted to build myself professionally. I still remember sending resumes hoping to be called in interview and especially engaged with my round belly ... But of course, none of this has happened.

My friends were evolving: some in the professional field, others in entrepreneurship. And I took pleasure in helping them develop their communication plan while telling myself: God, I would like to be in their shoes ... Then the angel who lives by my side and whom I love deeply, said: "Go ahead, there's nothing to stop you!"

This is how I founded X-Paire Communication et Conseils, that I hide in the eyes of the world though. Was it the impostor syndrome? I have never really dared to offer my services beyond my restricted circle, with a few exceptions. In the meantime, my baby continued to grow up, and it was a real pleasure to witness that. She brought with her a superb opportunity! I started teaching part-time in a CEGEP when she was 2 months old. And I confess I adoooorrrrre this!

Of course, I wanted to return to a full-time job, more classic I would say, a good 8:30 am to 4:30 pm! But no opportunity has arisen. And X-Pair sleeping in a drawer has resurfaced. The wake-up call was made when on Facebook a certain KIM GRIMARD launched a challenge. An incentive to take action that has boosted me.

I realized that  be a teacher and be an entrepreneur had one thing in common: TO COMMUNICATE! That's what I like, that's what I want to do!

So I took the resolution, no! Let's say the commitment in 2017 to achieve my other dream, being a businesswoman!

YES! DREAMS COME TRUE!

I want to be a woman of actions for my children, for my husband and most importantly for myself! It's not easy, hell no! And I do not know what the future holds for me, but that is another story!

Like Yvana, do you also think that dreams do come true?
